Woot! Step one is complete. Pulled this 96 3800 out of a regal that had a very minor fire under the hood, didn't even melt the plastic manifold. It was a complete engine with all accessories, got it for $250. Looks like they put the fire out with an extinguisher, it was a white powdery mess under the hood, and I won't be using any of the accessories because of that (and I don't know if they even worked in the first place). Sure is a greasy mess ain't it? Cylinders look like they're in great shape, pistons look fine too. The future of my build is still in the works, still doing research on what way I want to make some power with it. Laughing gas is guarenteed, but it'll be well hidden. Got a long ways to go, but the train's rollin' finally.

You want to get a straight edge on the deck side of those heads and the intake side. Most under hood plastics will melt between 400-500 degs. Heads and intakes can warp at around 300 deg. It is more a function of how long it was burning. It does take awhile to get something as big as a head up to a temps like that.

I will give em a check, but the heads really aren't of much use to me, since you can't use 98 and older castings to port and polish.

I got my extra engine from a 99 just like mine. That's where I got brave with heads and got a P&P kit. They actually turned out really good lol. Steve it looks like you got a good base block... I say go ***** to the walls N/A with happy gas =P Stroked, bored, high compression, the works =P

This will be my build thread. I'm not very good at taking pics of work I do, but I'm going to make an effort to do so as I build this thing. I think this thing is going to be thoroughly impressive when I'm done, even to the V8 doods

Got it torn down some more today, everything is in great shape. I've gonna strip the block down some more later today, such as remove the crank and cam, then take it to school with me and hone the cylinders. Then steam clean it, and paint the block. I'm thinking about just painting it black, painting the heads silver, and the valve covers black with stainless stripes on them. But part of me wants to paint it pontiac blue, not sure why.
