Default problems with my 3.8

Alright, I Have a 96 camaro 3.8, already I have had to replace the alternator, fuel pump, fuel filter, water pump and transmission is being worked on at this time, I am thinkin about putting a 700R4 in, cuz I got one free, and the shop guy wants 700 to rebuild my 4L60E will I notice that much of a difference if the 700 goes in instead? I have 2nd gear start if that changes anything? This Car Sat For A Couple of Years The Guy Gave Up Working On ... I Think When I Get The Maro Back I'm givin it a tune up with bosche plugs n wires, and K&N Filter. Should There Be Anything else I should be on the alert for? I Think Pretty Much Anything That Could Go Wrong ... Did lol . I think after replacing all these parts the 3.8 should be good to go.... anyone have anything to say or know about if their notorious for this let me know... I know if a car sits long enough even a lamborgihini will start to mess up... Before We Found Out It Was The Water Pump, I Was driving my camaro to the transmission shop in 2nd gear (automatic) bc drive and OD is not there(why its in the shop) I was driving around 40 mph @ 3k rpm after a while I heard a ticking and when I pulled off to the side I put it in N and smoke came from the hood and everything shut off... should I be alarmed the man said it was my water pump but should you smell burnt oil? maybe from the gaskets leaking oil was burning on the engine .... IDK let me know what u camaro fan think...

Sounds like everything I replaced on mine right before I traded it in on my Mustang. What kind of Bosch plugs did you guys use? I didn't have very much luck them. Kept havin random misfires, so I replaced em and it ran fine. Anyways everything you listed sounds like all that you should have to worry bout for a while. I not to hip on the trannys though.
