Default Probably a stupid question....

So I've talked talked to mechanics and car enthusiasts alike and have gotten 2 different responses about maintaining the cold air intake filter (k&n). One answer is that it just needs to be cleaned every 3000 miles and thats it, nothing more. The 2nd answer is have it cleaned every 3000 miles and have it replaced every 12000 miles. So which is the answer? If I need to get it replaced I want to get it done before I drive out to California.

both were soooo wrong... K&N have a million mile warrenty on their filters. All you have to do is buy the cleaner that K&N sells, any parts store should have some. People may have confused your K&N for a typical paper filter which should be changed every 12000 miles. If your filter is fairly new, just leave it alone, its ok for a while. I think they claim that after 36K you should clean it.
