Default Posi rear end swap

I've looked around on here a little bit and didn't find anything in depth on a posi swap for 4th gen. How in depth is it? I'm not even sure what my factory gears are in my rear end. I was told they were 2.73 from one person and 3.23 from another. Can someone clear this up? Is there a way I can tell by looking at the VIN on my car or some other way?

Anyways...I'm looking for something along the lines of a posi rear end with 3.42 gears and disk brakes(I currently have drums). Where should I look to find one and will it bolt right in? Is there a better rear end for my car? Opinions, comments, and other options are greatly appreciated.

You probably have 3.23 but check your rpo codes in your glove box. 2.73 would be GU2 and 3.23 would be GU5.

There are codes in the glove box? lol Which part of the "code" tells what I have?

Lol there should be. It's a list of 3 digit codes that tell you what options your car was built with.
There's a list of all of them

Why do you need posi with a 3.4? I used to have a 94 and know the 3.4's "capabilities", which is why I ask.

Just for the hell of it. I want the rear disks more than anything. My differential bearings are hitting the dust so I figured, "Hell put a posi with disks under the b**** lol". It costs just as much to do the bearings as it does to throw a whole rear end under it

And the liking for the 3.42 gears is I want the car to have a little more torque and acceleration more than top end. Should I be looking at something different to achieve that?

That's not a bad all around gear for a 5 speed.
Here's some handy tranny info from my archived bookmarks: http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_...nsmissions.htm
