nevermind. dad left the car in 5th and since I usually leave it in neutral and start it without pushing the clutch in it didn't start. fired up when I pushed the clutch pedal in.

Well that's interesting, since the neutral safety switch for a manual trans is operated by the clutch pedal. You shouldn't be able to start the engine while in any gear (or neutral), until the clutch pedal is depressed.
Perhaps yours is malfunctioning: 1987-02 Neutral Safety Switch w/manual trans

I was so going to post this

Something is not right, The clutch must be pushed in to start the car and how would the system even know what gear it was in? There is no gear sensor I am aware of except reverse that that just turns on the lights. Your car would have to have a neutral sensor in the shifter?

Yeah, I thought of that too. But how could that make current from the ignition switch magically jump across the open clutch pedal safety switch? We know he has a clutch switch, it worked for him.

The only reason I was slow posting was I wanted to make a sanity check and I tried my car. After I tried I thought to myself, I am a moron for even trying it.

I think my 74 would start in neutral but then again it would try to start in any gear as long as the seat belt was buckled. LOL

So, how did your "sanity check" work out? Whatever brain cells that are left still functioning alright? lol
