Every single 3.4 I've seen in a junkyard had a nasty, rust-colored cooling system. I don't know if lack of maintenance allows the cooling system to degrade and destroy the engine (usually a blown head gasket at cylinder #5) or the head gasket blows and trashes the cooling system. Regardless, the end product is a rusty mess.

Sometimes the windshield is marked "Engine Good," the engine is gone, and the remaining cooling system parts (radiator and hoses) look like crap. Makes me wonder how good the engine was or how long it will last for the new owner.

This is the norm:

Also remember that the coolant from the factory is orange/red. It makes a small amount of rust look even worse than it is. The head gaskets used by the factory were not of the highest quality and usually gave out well before now. Felpro gaskets are much better and will not give you the same trouble if installed properly.

Hopefully it lasts me a bit.
Ill definitely flush the coolant though. Does it require any special coolant or can I put whatever in it?

For the first time after using DexCool I would recommend using Prestone All makes all models antifreeze. It is green but it is designed to not gel up if mixed with DexCool.

I will agree with using all make anti-freeze, dex cool (aka death cool) will break down and clog your heater core and radiator. Had to replace both in my 95.
