Need info on fluids
Hello all, I just bought a 1998 camaro v6 3.8 5-spdwith 109K. I plan on changinga few fluids this weekend. Including trans., rear end, and theengine oil. I need to know exactly what is the factory weight oils are required for these (mainly rear end and trans). Please inform me of these. Also, is it very hard to changethe trans and rear end fluid?

Differential fluid- 85w90
If you have a Limited Slip Differential then you need the GM additive from the Chevy dealer. I think you only need one 2oz bottle, but if your rear end is making noise then it would be best to use a higher weight like 85w140 and two bottles of the additive. I changed my differential fluid the other weekend, and used about a bottle and a half of Lucas 85w140 which comes in 32oz bottles. This fluid change is very simple, and also requires a pump to pump out the old fluid. There is no need to take off the differential cover, and there is a plug on the top on the differential on the passenger side of the car. Just pump out the old fluid and pump in the new. Also be sure to use PTFE Thread Seal Tape on the threading of the plug before you put it back on. I reccommend using conventional differential oil solely due to the application that it isn't metal on metal contact such as the engine.
Engine Oil- 10w30 ( I believe)
Last time I changed my engine oil I used Mobil 1 5w30. I think I used about 5 quarts (including priming the new filter) Also be sure to get a new O-ring for your oil drain plug. If not, then get a new oil drain plug which has a new O-ring.

RE: Need info on fluids
Go with Dexron 6 (not 4) for Trans, and Full Synthetic oil (even if it is Wal Mart SuperTech, it should be better than ordinary oils). Rear end, not sure, but I would follow MFR. details, while looking for a synthetic option.
You didn't ask, but I changed from DOT 3 to Valvoline DOT 4 Synthetic brake fluid -- higher wet boiling temp. (wet temp. matters more than dry when you talk of potential brake failure)...

That makes me want to ask. Is the full synthetic oil good for my 94 3.4L auto? I have been using a regular high milelage oil castrol since i got the car. Point is, is it safe for my engineif Iswitch to a synthetic?

RE: Need info on fluids
ABSOLUTELY. I am using the Wal Mart Super Tech Full Synthetic in my '95 3.4L, and works better than any non-synthetic oil... Also use Super Tech Oil Filters (better than Fram believe it or not!)
You can switch w/no problems, it is totally safe.
