missfiring problems

not really. it just sounds like exhaust from a v6 thats not hitting on all cylinders. it made a really strange smell last night too. smelled like burning oil but there was no smoke or anything and the oil level was good

Ouch! My fuel pump went last year and they banged me 585.00 to fix that. It didn't exhibit the symptoms yours did though, it just stopped running and simply wouldn't start again.
The good news is that it ran again just fine after I wrote the check LOL.

Very true, never run to low. But I will add that most of the cooling is done by the fuel passing thru the pump. The motor itself is pretty well insulated from the fuel outside of the pump. You should avoid running low so you do not start picking up crap off the bottom of the tank that will load up your staining sock. This makes the pump work harder all the time. If you run out of fuel do not keep trying to start it as you will over heat the pump. And if you are on the highway and you think your are running out of gas shut the motor down. As long as the motor is turn with the key on the pump is running with almost no cooling.

so i get another call today and they had to send my gas tank off to have it cleaned. apparently there was something white in the tank that clogged up my filter. not sure exactly what it was yet but hopefully no one dumped anything in my tank

Your worst fear would be that you got a bad tank gas with too high an Ethanol percentage. That could melt your baffles (assuming they still use white plastic baffles). If that is the case your injectors will be next.
