I have a 99 camaro. Recently, since it has gotten more cold outside, my camaro doesnt want to stay running when the motor is cold. It starts just fine and then about 30 seconds after starting it starts to misfire and dies. It only does it when it is under 30ish degrees. I have also notices that my tension pully is not tracking normally. It is slanting downward and when my engine is dying the belt is comming off. I dont see how this could be causeing my engine to misfire, but i wont rule anything out. Any ideas about why my car runs like **** when its cold?

 

Unless your battery has little power (providing weak spark, and less power to fuel pump), I don't see that being a problem. Keep in mind that the belt spins the alternator which makes electricityto keep the previous things I mentioned with lots of power. Also, your PCM calls for a richer AFR when engine is as cold as you describe. That combined with weak spark, can cause misfire.

 

Well, my belt doesnt fall completly off. I guess that i havnt checked my battery but I am pretty sure that it is ok. My car starts every time with little effort.

 

Check the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor, and the IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor. If they report the wrong temp to the PCM, the engine will run poorly. The sensors can drift due to old age, but won't set a code unless they are totally broken or disconnected.

 

I recently replaced my ECT, but i havnt looked into my IAT at all, so that will be next on my list. Thanks

 

You may also want to look at the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve, as it may be stuck or clogged and not able to provide additional air to keep the engine running when cold.
