I wouldn't be so focused on the functioning of the "idiot light" myself. The gauges are there for a reason, to look at and "monitor" things.
When I learned to drive, part of the responsibility was keeping an eye on ALL the gauges.
There is that saying "try to make something idiot proof, and someone will invent a better idiot." Hmmmmmmm!

i never let mine get below half... if you look at half as empty no need to wry about a light...
