It's just time consuming to swap the drums for discs, but worth it -- I did it with a little help on my '95. The spider gears are the biggest pain, and some of the bolts are pretty tight back there too...

while it was on the lift today (oil change) i checked it. turns out it's definitely posi. it had to have came from another camaro because i didn't have any of those codes. now, my next question is this: if it's from a z28, rs, or y87, would the gears be different? i have to shift to 2nd around 33, 3rd around 55, and 4th around 88. 4th takes it all the way to 118 or so and shuts off with about a thousand rpms or more to spare in that gear. does that sound like regular v6 shift points? give or take a few mph of course.

these questions about my rear axle aren't all that important, i know, but i just want to know what i have is all.

sounds like a z28 rear... mine is auto but it shifts at lower speeds that that... i guess it might depend how hard you are driving it to

those shifts i mentioned above were if i ran each gear to the red line. well, i never redline, but right at it.

i thought the autos had longer gears.

Yeah sounds like a Z28 rear end. If it was stock you'd need to go to fifth to top it out.
