Default I smell coolant!!

It's not leaking (Visablly) and I have not lost any coolant. Anyone have any ideas as to why I would smell it when I get out?

Also, the lovely previous owner put a straight pipe on (Muffler Delete) and I'm guess never tuned it. Do you think the lack of back pressure will hurt the motor. Should I run out and buy a muffler?

Who's turn is it to respond to the "less back pressure is bad" myth? Anybody? I've lost track!
As far as the coolant smell, you could have very a small leak that's hitting your exhaust as you drive, and it will take a while for it to show lower in your reservoir.

Thanks 69. I know less back pressure isn't necessary bad except can't your car run leaner/richer if it is not tuned?

Back pressure, my favorite subject. lol I am glad that part of the question has been answered for the umpteenth time. One thing I would like to add regarding the smell of coolant, there is always the possibility that a minor leak in the heater core can cause a good deal of coolant aroma.

OK back to the real problem, You need to do a pressure test of your coolant system. Most likely its a small leak but could get big fast. Coolant system failure and the main reason for engine replacement for the 3800

On you engine next to the water pump is a plastic elbow for the heater. Mine is leaking and I smell coolant when ever I stop and get out of it. Might wanna check that out.
