Yes you can.
I replaced mine with a 2007, using nothing more than standard tools and a floor jack.
My only advice would be follow the 54 simple steps in the GM manual and make sure you tap the threads in the newly used holes in the iron block, as you will be going FWD to RWD.
replace all seals / gaskets while you are at it if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a while.
