Default Hard Steering Wheel

I have a V6 with just 34K miles. Is there a reason why the power steering is so hard to use? When I jack the front of the car and start the car, the steering is quite easy to turn. So is it just the weight of the car? Or was it just designed like that? Do other folks experience the same?

Thanks.

Maybe your fluid is low, or your pump is on the outs?

Is there something like performance steering pump available for this car? If I replace it, I might as well usehigh performance pump.

Pumps are the same, no high perf pumps and it sounds like your pump is bad...it's a quick, cheap and easy fix.

However, if your looking for tighter steering, you could swap a gearbox out of a Z28 or a V6 Y87 car for the sport steering ratio...but pumps are all the same perf level, doesnt' really matter

I haven't driven another 3.8 V6 that does not have the 14.4:1 Sport Steering, but I drove a 94 3.4 that was alot "looser" than my 96...

I cant seem to find the base V6 steering ratio to compare the difference tho

Don't you have a Y87?

If so then you already have the best factory gearbox...same as a Z

If I flush out the old steering fluid, maybe the new fluid will have better hydraulic properties than the factory stuff.
