Default Gauges

Hi all,

I bought a 98 v6 at an auction and I had the sneaking suspicion that my gauges where off, particularly the speedometer, but it stands to reason the tach and fuel gauge could be too.

After installing a stereo system with a gps equipped, my suspicions about the speedometer where confirmed, as my gps has a feature that can give you your speed. I'm not sure about the tach though, as i have been shifting mostly on the sound of the engine.

I haven't the slightest idea about what I need to do to either reset the gauge settings or if this is an indicator of a larger electrical problem, but i would appreciate some feedback before i take it to a mechanic and the B.S. comes flying in

Also i took into account that the gps could be giving me a bad reading, due to satellites and what not, but to put it into context, the disparity between the speed on my gauge and that with traffic is kinda ridiculous, especially on the highway. In neighborhoods, soccer moms are tailgaiting me as if i'm not even doing the residential speed limit, and on the highway the same thing happens in the slow lane. I was once clocked by one of those automatic speed warning sensors you see sometimes, and it said i was doing 55 when my speedometer read 70+. When i tried to apply this difference and compensate for it, i got a ticket! Cop said i was doing 85 in a 65.....so i would very much like to resolve this issue

May need a new Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Fuel gauge isn't the most accurate, even when it works (it's normal due to the shape of the tank). What leads you to believe the tach is off?
