Default Fast Idle, Hard shifting, won't shift into 4th

Hi all,

New to the forum and having trouble with my Camaro.

1995
V6
Automatic Trans

161,000 miles

No problems up to this point.

These problems have been getting worse and worse over the last month.

1. Idling fast when in Overdrive and stopped. 1,100-1,900 rpm.
2. "klunking" into 2 gear off of the line (normal driving speeds).
3. Will not shift out of 3rd and into 4th when going faster (65mph+), its stuck (65mph 3000rmp)
4. The engine just doesn't sound right at idle, to high pitch, and not just because it is idling faster.
5. Inconsistant idle.

It does start right up and isn't backfiring or anything like that.

I'm not a mechanic and am really just trying to figure out what to do with this car.

Anybody have any ideas what is wrong with it and how much money it will take to fix it?

Thanks everybody

Rich

Almost sounds like the 'Throttle Position Sensor'

I believe this thread belongs in the V6 area.

Is SES lite lit ? If it is, get the car scanned so you have a starting point. Otherwise check for air/vacuum leaks, idle control valve, TPS, stuck EGR, binding linkage to the throttle valve including cruise control. Has anyone messed with the throttle valve stops or cleaned it it out with the wrong stuff?

The transmission is clunking when you put it in drive because the engine is idling too fast
