I had my tranny rebuilt. I tried putting in the 1-piece driveshaft and it would only go in an inch. After that it wouldn't go in anymore. So, I tried my original 2-piece and ended up with the same problem.
Now, I notice there's a gap in the splines of the yolk on the driveshafts. There's no gap on the transmission yolk.
I did try tapping it in the transmission, but after a certain point the driveshaft couldn't move freely anymore.

Could it be the wrong yolk on the transmission? Doubtful. Could it be the new seals? The driveshaft is clean and smooth so I don't know why it won't go in?

 

Check with the guy that rebuilt the trans and see if he reused or replaced your output shaft. Never hit in on the output shaft. The plantary gearset was designed for the and it will break. You should have matching splines that yok needs to move freely.

The tailhousing bushing is causing the problem. There is also a new shaft seal too. It seems the yolk is catching on the rear lip of the bushing. I'll try again today and lubricate it better and do an good inspection of everything too. Hopefully it will go in!

 

Check the bushing really well and make sure your hammering didn't damage it. You should be able to remove the tailshaft with the trans in the car if you need to do any additional work on the bushing.

Well, couldn't remove the tailshaft with the tranny in the car. So, I took the tranny back out and took the tailhousing off. It's the bushing not letting the driveshaft go in. So, Monday or Wednesday I'll have a new bushing and I'll put the tranny back in and hopefully have it running again. I have to get the car inspected which is due tomorrow so I'll be a little late.

It's a new bushing that came in the rebuild kit for my tranny.
