Default Coil Spring Question

I was wondering if a rear coil spring on a 99 camaro if one side of the rear of the car was raised would the coil spring be able to come out? Because this fall when I changed my rear shocks I actually was able to pull it out. The floor jack had the car up to the point where the rear suspension was fully extended on that one side and there was no tension on the spring. All i had to do was compress it with my hands and it came out. Just wondering if this is normal or if the spring is crap. Because I wouldnt think a coil spring with so much force, supposedly on it, would be able to completly extend while its on the car.

Yes, that's normal. The "force on the spring", is the weight of the back of the car. Disconnecting the shocks allows the suspension/rearend to swing down a lot more than normal when jacking up by the body. The shocks act as a suspension travel "limiter".

Yea that makes sense, now that I think of it there is nothing that holds the rear axle close to the springs but the shocks. All the other suspension components allow it to move down. Thanks for the help.
