Check Engine Light on

Check Engine Light on
My 2000 V6 6 speed is showing a check engine light. With this light on, it will not pass the emmisions check in Tenn. It is showing an O2 sensor on the front right bank. I had it changed by a trusted mechanic. Now he is saying that the check engine light will not go off even with a new O2 sensor. he is saying that the PCM must be fryed. $500 to install a new one and program it. Does this make any sense or am I being raped?

PCM = five minute instal. Go to your parts store of choice and get a PCM for your car options. But before you do that check all wiring going to the o2 sensor and check the code your self at advance auto. It could also be a faulty sensor or a lazy a$$ mechanic.

If he cleared the code and it would not clear then that leaves you 2 options. One the O2 sensor is the wrong one or like Liberty said it is bad. Second is the PCM is bad like the mechanic said. The later is very unlikely with only an O2 sensor code popping up. The PCM is a very complex computer that will diagnose itself every time it starts up. It trips a code if any of its self tests dont come back good. No selftest code I say good PCM.
Take your car to your local O'reilly or Advance auto and borrow the code scanner and clear the codes yourself. O2 sensors have to fail 1 of 3 tests, in 3 test cycles before it will trip the code again. The tests are: at idle, cruising speeds above 15 but below 45, and speeds over 45. If the car is not driven on the freeway where the over 45 test can be performed after a given amount of time the computer will ignore that and decide if the 02 sensors pass or fail based on the other tests.

My mechanic said he tried 2 sensors just to be sure. When I picked up the car last night, Service Eng Soon light was off. After driving it about 8 miles to work this morning, light came back on. Never got over 45 mph. Still replace the PCM? Mechanic said they thouroughly checked all wiring and connectors. Thanks all for any help. I need to get this fixed as economicly as possible.

If you opt to replace the pcm DO IT YOURSELF. The part is like $150 and takes literaly less than ten minutes to replace. u need a rachet and I think an 8mm socket and short extension. disconnect the harness which is all of two clips on the ends remove the pcm, slide the new one in.. and reconnect. very simple even if u have never done it.
