Exclamation Catalytic Converter

My 98 3.8 needs a Catalytic Converter and Auto Zone claimed that the universal converters are common to trigger your check engine light. Before I spend $$ on a universal to save $$ does anyone have advice on universal cat vs. regular replacement cat don't want to find out I can't pass emissions just to save $$ and end up costing more.

I'd buy the replacement If I could afford it.
How much do you save?

Here in PA Junk yard are not allowed to sell used Cats. And Yes a Hi flow Cat can set a check engine light.

There are work arounds for the Hi flow setting the check engine light. You can get a adapter that move the O2 sensor out of the stream. You can also get the PCM reprogrammed to to ignore the down stream O2 sensor and not report the code. Before you do anything you would need to know more about the emisions in your area for your car.

I actually have this problem myself, one of my cats has become cracked and it has caused a bad rattle. But I dont wana fork over abuncha cash for an oem when im going to be putting headers and all that one of these days. Michigan isnt strict at all on emissions, so I was wondering if you guys knew what kinda cats I should get for headers and all that?
