The cats tend to fail if the engine is running too rich. The bad cat is a sign of possible other trouble.
If you dont have a o2 sensor down stream gut it and see if that helps. Pulling the cat aint to hard, just watch the hanger, I busted the hell outa mine and had to have the exhaust shop make one up for me.
