Default Car wont start.

Ok so I have a 96 rs. On the way to work this morning I stalled out. Went to start it back up and she won't turn over. Pushed her to the curb and waited a few min and tried again. She started after a few seconds but idled real hard with the rpm going up and down. There was a grinding kinda sound coming from the area of the pulleys but I couldn't tell where. There was also a lot of exhausts coming from the tail pipes. After about a min of this I put her in rev to try and get her closer to the curb and she stalled again with no luck starting again. engine is cranking, no code set at this time, and there was no fluid leaking that I could see. I'm looking for a flat bed to pick it up and take it home so I can give it a better looking over but thought I ask here for any advice on what it could be.
Thanks
Ian

unhook the belt and spin the alternator and see if its grinding. if so take the alternator out and replace. if the battery ran down cause the alt. crapped out the car will run bad or not at all. needs volts and amps to run the ignition. if not the alt try to track down were the noise is comming from.

Ok ill try and check the alt first. What do you think caused the high output from the exhaust, build up from me cranking the engine to try and start it?

u need to eleminate the easy fixes first and that alt will most likely be the easiest of what could be wrong. also need to find out were this grinding noise is and if it is assoiated with the motor running bad. spin the water pump to see if its maken the noise. low voltage will mess with the computer so that could mess up the fuel ratio. so its not overheating, loseing coolant, or have any water in oil or oil in water?

From what I could tell there was no fluid leaking or at least making it to the ground. The car started up fine this morning and ran great until bam!!! Car turned off and wont start. I'll start with the easy fix first and try and see where the sound was coming from.

well car started long enough for me to get it back home. It stalled out again as i turned onto my street and i had just enough momentum to park it thank god. Im going to assume its the alt because right before it stalled the check gauge light came on but the car was still able to drive a little more until it stalled out. My oil pressure gauge droped to zero though at this point and smoke started coming out of the engine but im thinking its from the alt dying and the battery not having enough juice to keep the things going.

I'm about to remove the belt and check the alt, it sounds like the grinding noise is coming from the alt or that area.
