AC works but blows reg air, not cold. Thermostat is brand new, temperature sending unit is new , water pump is new, good on coolant, no air in the system. Fans turn on in the 221 degree range. Engine runs at normal temperature. The people we got the car from along with a near by auto shop have been trouble shooting this issue for awhile, even going as far as replacing the instrument cluster twice and still the temp gauge runs high (gradually). Highly doubt that 3 inst clusters are bad.

Thinking there is a short somewhere between the temp sending unit and the PCM, or between the PCM and the cluster. Any one run into this before?

Have you done a coolant pressure test? Could be a blockage or something perhaps. Would hate to see you take apart the dash and all if it is not wiring.

Are you saying everything works and the car is NOT getting hot and this is just a gage issue? A cheap scan tool or laptop with a cheap cable will show you what temps the PCM is seeing.

Have not done one. Nor has it been done according to the PO.

Car runs at normal temp have checked it with a scan tool. The gauges have been changed out twice with the same outcome. I am trying to find out if it is a short by seeing if anyone here has had this issue.

If it is just a gage issue it sounds more like a connection is heating up over time and causing a build up in resistance more the a short.

Is this a show car or something? Someone is spending a lot of money to fix a gage. Factory gages are not very good to start with. A race Quality aftermarket temp gage can be bought for $40 or so.

LOL. Not a show car by any means. I get the factory gauges are crap but 3 of them in a row. Do I try to clean the connection or just buy aftermarket temp gauge and install?

gorn do you know if the gage signals go through the bcm in a 96, this sure sounds like a strange issue that has shades of a failing bcm.
