Default cai question

my car's a 96 3.8. there's a 2000 firebird 3.8 in a local junkyard with a k&n cold air intake. will that fit my 3.8? i can get it for 40 bucks, and it's in great shape. don't know why the people who wrecked the firebird junked it, a new hood and fender and it would've been fine, it runs great. but anyway, just wondering if it would fit, i don't see why it wouldn't.

should, a good way to find out would be to check at a parts place like sumitt or jegs and see if the same part fits both camaro and firebird.

it fits, did pretty much the same thing just in reverse with my old camaro when I wrecked it and my buddy's 01 firebird.

i'm going to look at it again. i wasn't aware that the 98 and up intake on a 3.8 was different. it had K&N on it when i looked at it, but it could've just been the stock intake with only a K&N filter instead of the whole thing. when i first saw it i thought it was an entire kit for sure until i saw other newer 3.8 intakes and how they're all centered instead of going off to the side like mine. someone also said those newer factory intakes are almost as good as aftermarket intakes, so would i lose anything for buying a factory 2000 3.8 intake for 40 or 50 bucks? that's assuming it is factory haha.

You'd lose $40-$50 if you bought an intake from a '00 for your '96. Unless you feel like swapping the front end to the catfish style ('98+).

so the intake is totally different under the hood? i didn't know that.

...and i've never heard the term catfish used to describe the style of the 98+ before. that comparison never even crossed my mind lol. genius

Ya, they are different. K&N website only sells for 3.4L and 98+ 3.8L
