Default A/C problems for a 3.8

I added freon to the system and it was blowing cool but not cold. After a couple of weeks now the comp is not kicking on and it's back to hot air on hot days. In the mornings when it's about 72 out, it's still not blowing cool air, but not as hot as before when it's 5 million degrees out. I sprayed soapy water on all the fittings/hoses and with no visible leaks until I spray around the black box which is fitted together w/ a gasket at the firewall.
Could there be a leak somewhere else or is that a possible problem? When it was blowing cooler there was a faint smell of either coolant or freon. I checked for coolant leaks under the car and no leaks. On a hot day when I'm sitting in traffic, the temp runs up really quick till the fan kicks on. I'm not losing coolant anywhere though. Any thoughts?

Assuming the air doors and AC compressor are in good condition, then it is possible that either the refrigerant is low, or there is moisture or air in the system. All can kill efficiency, or cause the system to freeze up internally.

You can spray with soapy water, see no bubbles and you still might have a slow leak. Best way to tell is to get some fluorescent dye and look that way.
