Headgasket failure is more caused by time and lack of coolant changes then it is of miles. Also how the car is used can effect it. As I said in my first post it is very comon failure with these cars. I see 2 or 3 per month on craigs list that "need a head gasket". If the job was not such a back breaker I could make money at it. I would go so far as to say it is the number one cause of major repairs on the 3.4.

Oh and the best mod you can do to a 3.4 is newer heads off a FWD 1999+, Sorry I do not know the details.

so my best bet is to just pull the heads and get them done and replace the gasket just to be sure and replace the radiator if need to ?

Have you done a compression test, or taken a good look at the spark plugs?

I'd pull the heads, definitely change the gaskets, they should be changed anytime the head is removed. Also flow test the radiator or at least see how it performs when it is running again. Check for cold spots on the core. These engines were bad for head gasket issues and a few times, have seen the heads cracked, so make sure they pressure test the heads.

I find it hard to beleive that nobody has asked you if you have checked the oil. Have you and does your car emit white smoke from the tailpipe?

The reason I did not ask the basic question is because he verifed there was hydracabons in the rad. Hydracarbons only exist in exhaust gas. We used to use our four gas anylizer to do the same thing. It is 100% accurate. If Hydracarbons are in the rad then you have either a blown headgasket, cracked head or cracked block. Until he pulls the heads he will not know which. The combination of coolant loss and hydracarbons mean not only is it a leak but its a big one.

What is your shop like? How is you back? I hope OSduck posts I think he has one with the motor out and he is doing a set of head gaskets with the motor in. Maybe you should PM him. He did mention in one of the threads that useing a torque angle gage was tuff in the car.
