Your brother may be thinking of the DOHC 3.4 GM made for a while. That engine has a timing belt and chain. It was never used in the Camaro though.

It only has a chain in the block used to control the cam rotations(For the intake and exhaust valves) the only belt is the serpentine used to control the alt. and other engine accessories.

GM seems to hate Timing belts. I remember the OLDs OHC 4 cylinder and the Chevette had timing belts but I cannot remember any others. Anyone?

On a side note the LT5 Corvette motor (4 over head cams) was originally built with a 4 inch wide timing belt. I road in a prototype at the Pittsburg tech center in 1988 the thing sounded wicked bad with that belt but Marketing did not like it.

Back in the 90s GM sold a bastardized version of the 60 degree 3.4 for use in front drive cars. This engine used the 3.4 block with 4 valve heads and 4 overhead cams. It used the original timing chain to drive an intermediate shaft attached to an external cogged timing gear which drove a timing belt to spin the cams. The heads were physically huge and it entirely filled the engine bay. It was rated 210 +- 5 HP, depending on the transmission used. Got a 93 Grand Prix 5 speed with that engine in my drive way.
