Question 96 v6 Camaro- Surges/sputters

My 96 cam hesitates while driving. On deceleration the motor stops. The check engine light is on as well. Any ideas? Thnx.

What codes does your car have? That will prolly give the best indication of what is wrong. Go to your local O'Reilly or Advance Auto and have your codes read for free

P0102 MAF circuit Low input. This usually means the MAF has died and the low input means a short in the signal circuit. This is pretty common and usually replacing the MAF cures it. The other cause of this can be wiring damage. Also in rare cases if you have a oiled air filter, too much oil can cause the MAF to burn up.

P0171 and P0174 are the same code and prolly related to the P0102 code. This code is system too lean bank 1 (P0171) and too lean bank 2 (P0174). A bad MAF can also trip this code as the engine will go into a failsafe mixture that the engineers have programed into the ECM as just enough fuel to get you home, and not cause alot of pollution.

The MAF code can cause drivability issues just like you describe and if it is not corrected an over lean condition can damage your O2 sensors, Cat, and plugs. Instead of throwing an EGR at it get a new MAF sensor and also if you use a K&N air filter, clean it and reoil it with less oil.

P.s. you will need to go back and have the codes cleared from your computer. The OBDII system will not always automatically remove codes once the issue has been corrected. Most systems will only remove the code after 50 or more starts with no reoccurance of the issue that tripped the codes in the first place.

ive been told that gm comps reset every 100 miles so if you fix the problem and drive 100 miles the code should go away

I replaced the MAF Sensor, and I cleaned the K & N filter and used less oil. The car runs like a champ. Thanks to everyone for your help and knowledge. I wish I would have found this forumn sooner. Thanks again!

Glad I could help. Next time read the codes before throwing parts at the car and you will save alot of money. There are a few nice Haynes and Chilton repair manuals that give alot of information on OBDII codes and what they mean and what systems in the car can cause the code to pop. The Haynes and Chilton for our cars does not go into much detail about how GM designed their OBDII system. Again glad we could help, and lets see some pics of your ride on the post your pics thread.
