ok so i spun a rod bearing and i think it will be cheaper to put a junkyard motor in it, than to have it rebuilt.

how hard will it be to put a 3.8L into it? will it drop right in and be good to go with my computer?

my grandparents also have a 95 oldsmobile with a 3300 SFI. will that motor work in the camaro with the transmission?

 

Except for the number of cylinders, the 3.8 is a totally different engine from the 3.4 in your car. For the same amount of work, you can install a LT1 engine which is more compatible to to your car. In any case, PCM, wiring harness, intake and exhaust plumbing, motor mounts, suspension, (both the 3.8 and LT1 are heavier than the 3.4), and possibly the transmission. So, do your homework before jumping on this project.

 

i just finished putting in a 3.8 long block into my 96 rs and if you can rent a engine hoist its really not to hard just time consuming. i got my long block from a company called roadmaster and they sell all different motors so if i were you and were serious about doin it go with a long block 3.4 and you will be set. the long block comes built and all you have to do is put on your old timing chain cover, intake manifold, valve covers, egr, water pump, tensioner pulleys, and power steering pump. mine came with a new oil pump and it took me 4 days to finish the whole swap

how much was that 3.4 longblock shipped?

 

i purchased a 3.8 long block, i gave them my vin just to be 100% that it is the correct motor and it came out to around 1200$ with 300$ shipping so around 1500$. but that was for a 3.8 so i am not sure what you could expect to pay for a 3.4, i would think less but thats just me.

 

i have an engine hoist, so what am i looking at? about a day project to pull a motor and replace it? i've swapped carbed motors a lot of times, never fuel injected tho.

 

well for my motor, i needed the hoist, fuel line pullers, the special gm harmonic balancer puller, and alot of basic tools. if you have done motors before than it isnt much different, just way more little sensors and vaccum lines to be removed. i took pictures of every little step when i first tore it down so that i could reference back to them when i was finishing and that made it pretty easy also. you will also need to make sure you get a full motor gasket kit for it and i recommend from felpro because the kit that came with the motor had a wrong upper intake manifold gasket and no exhaust manifold gaskets.

dont rush, dont skip processes. otherwise you will hate yourself.
