Default P0420 Code

I have a 2001 V6 Camaro and I am getting a P0420 code and so am unable to get tabs! What does this mean? I see it has something to do with the oxygen sensors or catalytic converter. If so, is there a way I can fix it enough to at least get tabs until I can replace it? I usually work on old air cooled VW's, so this is a first for me!

Thanks for any help :-)

This may help, most likely the cat is fouled or the downstream O2 sensor is bad.
P0420 Error Code: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
PS what the heck ARE TABS.

Isn't tabs an abbreviation for tables. Maybe he was saving up his letters to use the "l & e" on another question?

Do this: Get a code reader that can clear the codes. Clear all codes. Run the engine for more than 10 minutes until it is warmed up. Then run the engine for more than 5 minutes between 1500 and 2000 rpm. Then drive the car for a few miles for the test to run, until your code reader shows the Catalyst ready flag is set or Ready. If the SES is not lit, do not run the engine of the car for more than 9 minutes at a time until after you get it tested. If the SES is lit, repeat the process above.
Drive the car no more than 9 minutes at a time until the code reader shows all readiness items are done/passed.

LOL Tabs are the year and month stickers I have to put on the license plate ...emission failure = no tabs = no driving and I do NOT want to take a two hour bus ride to work!
