Default Manual to auto swap

Picked up a 96 Z28 6 speed manual really cheap. The only reason i bought the car was for the 6 speed which I plan on putting in my 67. I was going to part out the rest of the car however it turns out the car is too nice to scrap. So now I'm thinking saving the car and putting in a automatic since it would cheaper then trying to find another T56. Any advice on what trans to put in it? What will fit fit without too much trouble and modification?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

an auto from a 96 or 97 z28 camaro. trans is car specific. a 94-95 can be built to work in a 96. you will also need wiring harness and pcm from a 96 z28 auto along with the center console shifter and associated linkage, cables and whatever im forgetting. its not an easy switch but can be done if you have another camaro... lol,

Sounds like too much $ and work. What about a 700r4, 350,or 400? Will any of those work?

700r4 will work, it will still be a bit of a project, You would probably make more money parting the car out then the finish car would be worth. The cut up modified Z will not be worth much

The original plan was to keep the T56 and part out the rest. But the wife saw it and thinks she should have it. I do have a 700R4 in the 67 so at least I wouldn't have to buy another trans.

700R4 = 4L60, same animal, different name. The automatic that a 96 would have is a 4L60E, electronic shift. It would be a lot less hassle to install a 700R4/4L60, the only electrical control is the torque converter lockup, which can be made to operate normally using an aftermarket control unit...or you can wire the t.c. with an on-off switch. You'll have to figure if it's worth your time and money to do vs what you could sell it for either as a running car or parting it out.
