It really varies depending on where you live and where you take it. I can give you a range of $1500 to $3000.
GM dealership are going to be the highest prices but the warranty should be good at any GM dealer. Aamco is about the only chain transmission place I would go. Not that I think they are any better you are paying for their warranty and county wide coverage.
To get it done well for cheap your best bet is to find someone that rebuilds them all day long but also does "side" work. Your do the removal and install and let him rebuild it. It is not hard to remove and install the trans just make sure you undersatand how to seat the converter and you flush out the transmission lines. You can search youtube for those items. There is lots of good videos.

A good thing about going to a GM dealer, is they do not bother to rebuild the transmission in house, but usually install rebuilt Good Wrench transmissions, which are rebuilt to GM specs, which includes any upgrades that GM came up with.

I went to a local small trans shop, but highly recommended by the car guys, to see about having the 700R4 from my Vette rebuilt. He recommended buying a rebuilt from one of those well known companies (PATC, Mad Dog, etc.) as that would be cheaper than paying him. After comparing prices, yep, that's the better way to go.
