Reasonably successful day today. I fixed the backfiring problem--I had the cylinder 1 and 5 plug wires switched around. I also discovered that my shift cable linkage was off. That fixed my park, reverse, and 1st gear problems. THANK YOU CRABY!!!!!!!!!!! However, when I get the car out on the road, it still doesn't want to shift from first gear. I'm pretty sure I have enough ATF in it now, but the problem still remains. The shop I talked to suggested it was the shift modulator. I'm going to have them take a look at that before they get started on the exhaust tomorrow morning (same place). Power steering and speedometer issues remain as well.

Now for some pics. I got the thing out in the daylight for the first time in a long time today and pressure-washed some of the dust off. Still desperately needs a good wash though.

I think I'm starting to lean more towards stock taillights and turn signals. I'll wait to see what I think once I have the decals, exhaust tips, and window tint. Not to mention when I have regular salad shooters on there instead of those hideous black ones.

Also, with most of the dust off, I could see just how bad the front bumper really is:

When I rolled my '95, they used the jaws of life to open the hood, so they scuffed it up pretty bad when trying to jam it underneath. I guess I'm just going to have to get it repainted sometime this summer.

the computer uses the speedo vss sensor to gage shifting points. look/search for the link 69 has posted for the vss testing.

huh. well since my speedometer doesn't work, that would seem to make a certain amount of sense if that's the case...is that the small plug at the tail-end of the transmission? That one kinda fell off--looked like the work of rodents--when we were putting the trans in, and my dad spliced the wires together. The speedometer worked before we started working on the car.

is that link you're talking about a sticky? where is it?

so far i found this
To test the Vehicle Speed Sensor:
Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor from the transmission.
Connect an AC voltmeter set to the 0 to 1 volt scale to the connector pins (a) and (b).
Turn the Vehicle Speed Sensor pinion quickly with fingers and measure the voltage across pins (a) and (b)

Craby, you're my hero. If I ever meet you in person, I'm going to have to give you a big bear hug (no homo). We jacked up the car this morning to check the vehicle speed sensor, which had broken off and we had put it back on before. We fixed the connection, and sure enough, trans, speedometer, and power steering all work fine now. I drove it 7 or 8 miles to the shop this morning without a problem. They're putting on custom-bent 3" header-back exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler and chrome turned angle-cut tips, doing alignment, charging the AC, fixing the ABS/TC, and a couple other little things. I'll have it back tomorrow or the day after.
