I have been researching a new head unit and front speakers for my 2000 Z with the Monsoon system. I know almost nothing about modern stereos. Any advice or comments would be great.


I am thinking Double Din.

Here is what I have found so far.

Metra 99-3311B Dash Kit

Something like

and
PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Adapter

With

You wont get much bass from those speakers. I like these better: Pioneer TS-A1675R

 

I did stereo car shows for years with my firebird and the best sound for the buck I ever got...
Get a Kenwood head unit around the $150 price point minimum and what your looking for is the HPF option or high pass filter. Most of their stereos have it but don't assume that it does just because it cost more.
It allows you to filter out the heavy bass to your door and rear speakers so they don't distort and sound like crap.

#2 go with a good 6.5" coaxial speaker for all 4 locations. Disconnect and do not use the speakers in the rear hatch if you have them. I like using a Lazar 6.5" with 1 coaxial tweet and around 150 watt RMS.

The head unit and filter are critical though! Stay away from Jensen, Walmart, out anything from a parts store when it comes to audio. You can put a $150 Kenwood with the HPF set up correctly and you'd be blown away by what your stock speakers can do!

 

No hatch speakers? Why not?

I've got 6.5" component drivers in my doors and sail panels (JL C3 series, tweeter screws onto a raised section that's through the main driver's cone). I want to retro fit 2 more 6.5" components in the hatch, with an 8" sub in the CD-changer compartment after I recover from my drive train spending.

Also definitely need an amp for the speakers before I look at that though, my head unit barely powers the 4 that I have right now.

 

First, with a good head unit and your filters set correctly you will not miss them. You won't even know they were there.

Second, without an rear amp to drive for REAR speakers your going to drop the ohms at the head unit an over work the radio.

Best setup I ever had for listening was 4 Lazar 6.5s to a $150 Kenwood that had high pass filters built in.
It screamed! Then I added a MTX 12" Sledgehammer sub and 3000 watts... lol, couldn't hear the screaming anymore.

But the 4 speakers are more than plenty with the right head unit.

 

Sounds like someone has a problem hearing the higher frequencies. Wonder how that could have happened?

 

Not sure what did it! The 33hrz notes at quake levels, the 36 airborne jumps, the usual combat time, or the 2k lb JDAM that hit next door. If I had to guess it was the 33hrz though 😉

 

As it is right now, I've not yet set my HPF for my speakers. I don't have any other drivers (other than the 4 components) for noise in there, so if I do that, all the low frequencies are going to be tuned out. I think I'll honestly just pick up an 800W JL amp to wire my drivers up to, that way I'm not under-driving the speakers, and over-working my head unit like I am currently.

Sucks to hear about the JDAM strike, but the jumps and stuff sound cool enough, lol.
All I've done in my time is just sonar stuff in the navy.
