And I'm going to guess that it won't go into park either?
Your shift linkage is out of adjustment at the trans.
Put your shifter in park, or as close to park as it will go.
Disconnect the linkage cable/rod from the shift lever on the transmission.
Push the trans lever all the way forward into park position (towards front of car).
Screw out the adjuster rod on the shifter cable until it fits comfortably on the arm on the trans.
Make sure the transmission now goes into the right gears to correspond with the indicator on the console.
Then put in a new cotter pin in the linkage.

I'm guessing you missed the part where he said he was the one who installed the shift linkage.

What I read into it is that he had the trans rebuilt and put the whole thing in himself? But it's clear he did some DIY stuff, linkage included.

That wasn't directed towards you, it was directed towards jagass, who always ends his sentences with... I'm with you, if the guy installed it all back, he would know how to adjust it as well. No reason to take it back to the shop.
