Red face Wheels, Tires and all that jazz...

Hey everyone....

I have a bit of extra $$ and want to spend it on my Camaro. Thought I would start with wheels and tires. I want that "fat tire 69 old school look" for my 2001 V6 Coupe. I have read through the forums and have a few questions.

1. The first thing that annoys me are those tiny wheels and tires. I would like to upgrade to something like an 18" or a 19" wheel. The question is about width of the wheel. 8? 9? 10? What can I safely put on the car without rubbing or handling issues? While I know I will use the same height wheel on the front would I use the same width as I would in the rear?

2. On to Tires. I am totally at a loss here. High profile? Low Profile? What the hay? I want something that will fill up all that s-p-a-c-e that seems to be showing on my stock set up.

3. I don't want to lower the car. Actually I would like to see the rear end be a little higher (maybe a half to 1 inch.) Can this be done with adjustable air shocks or do I need some sort of spring? Or is this not an advisable thing to do?

Let me say thanks in advance for all the help.

first off...how you doin? lol

as for your questions...i run a 17x9.5 wheel and have 0 issues with fitment...i would think you could get away with an 18x9.5 and not have problems. that said...the bigger wheel you go, the higher the car will sit. if i were you, i'd do some research online and look at other people's cars and see if any of them rub ya right and figure out what size rims and tires they are running. keep in mind that the lower profile of tire you go that the ride will be a little stiffer

your best bet is to go with some 275 tires, if you go any higher you will have rubbing issues. And 19 inch wheels are tires are going to be a lot more money. If you want to fill in the space you could always lower it to look better as most people do.

Good point. I think I have found some actually. One of the members of this board has a blue Camaro that has chrome wheels that look like flat stars. I have sent him a private message so I can look them up. Will totally post when I find out what they are.

I am doing GREAT... (sometimes I forget my manners)

Thanks much for the information. I will keep looking around online.
Hadn't thought about bigger wheel = higher sitting vehicle. (duh)
Appreciate the tip about the low profile tires...they do seem to be a bit more expensive than regular tires. I'll stick to regular tires...wider...and look around for good price points on wheels.

Have a good one!

Hmmm...maybe 18's then. This might be a silly question but...let's say I get larger wheels...that is going to make the car sit higher...then can I put those lowering springs on it to close some of the space in the wheel well? Does that make sense?

yes you can...but again the ride will be sacrificed a bit and you would then want to get new shocks. that's exactly what i did though...my car came stock with 16's, i threw the 17s on it and lowered it about an inch and a half...LOVE IT! haha
