Mechanic says I need a new wheel bearing. I could not hear anything when driving, It does shimmy when braking but thought that might be rotor related. What sound does a bad wheel bearing make? How hard is a wheel bearing to replace?

bearing hub is not a hard project. u will need to take the tire, brake caliper and rotor off to get to the hub. there are four bolts holding the hub on and a speed sensor wire to umplug.

Jack the front wheels up off the ground and grab the top of the tire with one hand and the bottom with the other hand. Now try to rock the tire. If your bearing is worn, you'll feel the slop. These sealed bearing hubs are easier to change than the older style bearings are, but they never get a maintenance greasing in their life. Once they start to go bad (dry and sloppy), it's days are numbered.
