Default What should I do?!?!

I just found out my "syncros" in my transmission are worn out. I talked to two shops and they both quoted me $2000 - $2500 to pretty much rebuild it. I've already put about $2500 in the car since I bought it almost 3 years ago. I really don't have the money right to to fix it right now. I was thinking of either selling it the way it is and get as much out of it as I can or driving it until it isn't drivable any more and sell it. I have no idea what I can get out of it but I'm hoping around $2k. If I can get 2 out of it then I might be able to get around enough money to upgrade to a Z28. So should I fix it and drive it or sell it and buy a 2000's Z28? Also the 2010 Camaro is out of the question.. I'm a broke full time college student . Thanks guys.

Learn the art of double clutching, and you won't need any stinking synchros.

I would say that is a little high for a rebuild on a T56. You can pick up a built one from RPM transmissions for about 2300-3000 depending on what level you are going for.

if that's high for a t56, then that's crazy for his t5

yeah I thought it was steep too but I took it to another shop and they gave me the same quote. There's just no way I can afford to put any more money into this car. How exactly does this so called double clutching work? If I can figure out a way to drive it like it is for a while it would help out a lot. I've heard the term "double clutching" before but have no idea how to do it?

push clutch in, take it to neutral, release clutch, push clutch in, put in gear, release clutch

Transmissions in cars of yesteryear didn't have syncros. Double-clutching was the way you HAD to shift.

I never understood that double clutch crap. oldest manual car I drove was a 74 beetle. didn't need to double clutch that, so what exactly does yesteryear consist of? lol

Around the early 1930's is when synchros came about. Some, not all cars had them at that time.
