please re-read what our resident crab fisherman suggested.
pull out the dipstick tube (what the disptick rides in)and see if it's in the tube itself
Don't pull the pan yet. Do like Craby said and see if it is stuck in the dipstick tube. Shine a bright light down it and see if you can see anything as far down as possible.

I would bet you it is not in the engine, probably fell off and you didnt see it fall after removing the stick or it unwrapped while driving. Unless you watched it go down the tube. Try to remember if it was on it before you grabbed the stick to check oil level. electrical will not stick to anything with the slightest amount of oil and tends to unwind easily too. I always back it up with tie wraps for this reason.
