First things first, what year and model car are we talking about? You haven't even said if it's a V-8 or V-6.

have a look at your plug wires. are they old, if so check under the hood when its dark, try to find a spot where its really dark, start car, open hood and see if you got a light show around your plug wires. if so replace plug wires. probably not a good idea to be revving the 24 year old engine to 6k rpms. I thought the 3.4 had rev limiter. check plugs to make sure they are firing and not fouled. check air filter, maybe clean the maf with some maf cleaner.

My step one would be a exhaust back pressure test. There are a lot of things that can limit RPMs but most will set a trouble code. Since you did not mention a check engine light I assume it is not on. If you play the odds its a plugged cat but a stretched timing chain will cause the exact issue also.
