Trans., Pinion/Carrier gears weak/under-spec'd components?

In my '01 SS w/just under 89k mi., I just had my 2nd rebuilt-trans installed last week (manifested in delayed gear shifts and higher RPMs than normal for a gear) and 2nd pinion seal leak (resulting in low-diff fluid) both were re-done about 12k mi. ago... This time I had to have the pinion bearings carrier bearings replaced, as they were damaged (loud whirring noise from rear-end).
Is this not uncommon for this car/configuration when you drive it hard? One would think the trans would be stronger...
Also had the alternator replaced due to headlight/dash flicker, and low-note horn had died. Extended Warranties sure are worth it.
