Default Temp gauge go's wild

ok i moved from phoenix az to rochester ny, my car sat for a few days now I drove it once and when I drove it today I noticed the temp gauge is flipping out and is all the way past 260 beyond the red, I pulled over to check everything and the car was not running hot at all, I have a 160 failsafe thermostat installed however im guessing the temp sensor is bad? an ideas guys btw all my other gauges are working properly

check the wiring to the sensor and test the sensor. if its grounded it will max out the gauge. this is for a lt1 but the sensor should ohm the same. 4th Gen LT1 F-body Tech Articles

How's the coolant level? Did you bleed the system? An air pocket at the sensor can cause it to jump up like that.

I had my thermostat replaced once when my water pump died and the new one was faulty. It was getting much hotter than normal. Maybe try a new thermostat?

These cars demand that the cooling system be bled by those little brass srews on top of the water pump thermostat housing and the upper cooling line. Just loosen the screws and add fluid until it starts to leak out these holes tighten, run car a few, then open each screw to check for air pockets. Its like bleeding brakes ....... Kinda.this is how I have done it in the past, not sure if it is the correct method but it seems to work for me.
