Default Starter removal on a 97 Camaro 3.8

I can't remove the 2nd bolt on the starter because the 5/8" socket won't go on the bolt - the flywheel cover is very close to the bolt and the socket won't go on. Any idea how I can get that socket on the bolt ?

I've tried everything and I think I may have to take the flywheel off but one of the screws on it won't budge. I'm not having any luck today.

Taking off the flywheel shouldn't be necessary, but i mean, you do what you gotta do. I would suggest maybe the flywheel cover, or a bolt for said cover, is getting in the way.

On the 3400 with an automatic you have to remove the flywheel/torque converter splash shield to remove the starter. The same is probably true for the 3800.

Just a note here for you... All the bolts on the engine are metric. You may want to consider using a 15mm instead of a 5/8"

Ya you have to remove the sheild first. On bolt is short and easy the other you need a deep socket and a breaker bar. I did it with out but I used my feet to push it to crack it loose. Also I thought they were 12 mm bolts? That's what my car had...
