Default speaker question

Hello, i have a 1993 z28 with factory audio. Im planning on upgrading the head-unit along with all the speakers since the front two don't work, and the rears sound like they were made with tin cans. After doing some online research im finding that there was factory amps? Im thinking about just running new wires to all four speakers. How do i know if i have the amp or not? Its the factory system with the cassette deck, orange LCD screen and like 4 radio presets. Also what are the speaker sizes?, i peeked at the front two they look like 5-6.5"

so its not a bose system? if not then you have no amps and can use factory wiring. 6.5 is correct, some 6.75 will also fit. the amps if you have them are on the speakers and the base and its amp is under the plastic on the oposite side as the spare tire and jack. i like to use crutchfild to get an idea of what will fit.

Didn't Chevy get the AC Delco/Delphi units? And Pontiac the Bose? I still have my factory cassette laying around and it's Delphi, where else my Grand Am has Bose.

Any ways, you can cut the wires going to the amp and take two of them and connect them to aftermarket speakers with an aftermarket head unit installed, you don't have to run new wires unless you putting them on a amp.

Aw I see. I was always under the impression that Chevy and Buick received the AC Delco/Delphi units since every Chevy or Buick I owned had it where else all my Pontiacs had Bose. Can't speak for Caddy cause I never owned one. But...that would make sense having Bose as a "step up" sound system. I'll have to double check when I get home, but I don't believe I had a Bose system but still had amps on the speakers.

Can you tell me more about this? What years fit? Are you talking a "MyGig" radio out of a Charger? What did you have to do to get the wires to match?

I'm fed up with the sound system in my 94 too. Mine has the factory Delco Bose system which got you an amplified speaker in each door and the subwoofer in the back LH corner. I don't know if the system sounded good in 1994 but I can tell you that it sucks now. I bet all the speakers have blown cones from the awful sound coming from them.

What's weird is that the base system for a 94 had 4 speakers. One in each door and one at each side of the back seat. On a car with the Bose system the rear grills are there but there's nothing behind them. No wiring either.

People must have complained about this because the Bose system was revised for 95. It got 4 speakers plus the rear subwoofer. None of the speakers have the same part numbers as the 94 system.

I keep hoping to find a wrecked 95 with the Bose system so I can get the wiring harness at least but so far no luck.
