Default Slipping gears maybe?

Whenever i am in third gear and i stay there for awhile, when i go to accelerate the car acts like its in neutral. It will sometimes do this in fourth as well. But if i shift into neutral and then back into drive, it will go away, but it does this quite often. Any advice will help. Thanks Guys, by the way its an 02 Z automatic.

sounds like low fluid to me. look for a leak. if no leak is found change fluid.

the tranny filter must be an automatic thing.......... black magic as far as I am concerned...... all this hocus pocus... little midget running around in there changing gears for u......

I drained the fluid about 3 months ago, but i didnt replace the filter. How hard is it to replace the transmission filter? Any good sites for steps?

when you drop the pan you will see the black fliter right there, it just pops in and out, not hard at all.the filter is as important as changing the fluid

Can transmission fluid be added to the existing fluid if it is low, or does it have to be drained first? How hard is removing the pan?

Check the shifter linkage I had a problem with mine that gave similar problems on my '95 3.4L Auto.

Also, when you are cruising the highway, does it reliable stay in the downshifted gear? Also, when you gun it while already moving, does it have trouble engaging, like it takes longer and does not feel right? If so, it's probably bands/clutches in the Trans., as happened to me twice in my '01 SS Auto. I also had a strong whirring sound from the rear-end which turned out to be worn gears...
