Default Slave cylinder

I took my car to a transmission shop while out yesterday because I've been having pressure problems with my clutch. I go in to make an appointment to bring it in the next day to have it looked at and then I go to leave and the clutch is completely shot. I couldn't get it into a gear. I left it overnight and they called me this morning saying that the slave cylinder is not working (they couldn't tell me how) and that they also recommended replacing the clutch assembly all together. He also mentioned that they couldn't test the master cylinder until the slave was fixed and if the master need replaced it would be another $375 on top of the quote over the phone they gave me of $1500!?!? I've already called another shop that quoted me $900 to do the same job. Have any of you had this job done because according to both shops it's pretty common to have it go out around 100k miles and if so how much did you end up paying?

What exactly are replacing, fixing, and changing for you?

You can figure out the price of the parts and the "book time" that it takes to do the job. Which is usually a job anyways.

What does the shop charge per hour?

i changed my master cylinder and slave cylinder on trans am and i just found the instructions on google. i think it cost me 100-125 for parts. my slave was external though and some cars are not. you actually have to remove the transmission for some.

I'm having the slave cylinder replaced (which is internal and requires removing the transmission) and I'm replacing my clutch assembly for as close to stock of an OEM clutch as I can find. The shop i broke down at wants to charge me $820 in labor alone (which includes $288 for taking out the transmission and $288 to put it back on?!?!) and over $566 in parts. The second shop I got a quote from wants $576 in parts and $414 in labor. The second shop is more of a gearhead shop that had 2 other camaros in the shop when I went and got the quote (including one of the nicest maintained 3rd gen IROC camaros I've ever seen with 185000 original miles on it). The first place is Tri-City Transmissions.
