Default shifting problem

ive just bought a 94 z-28 about a month ago, im really not into racing all that much but after 2 weeks of being provoked by my 18 year old brother who has a 98 mustang gt i finally gave in and we gave it a shot; the problem i have is when i got into it it didnt want to shift from 1st to 2nd gear, the tach ran all the way to 7000 before i let off of it. any ideas of why this would happen and any way to go about fixing it.
by the way i took him by about 4 car lengths even though i had to let off for a second to let it shift

Probably weak or sticking shift solenoids. Try power flushing the transmission, put in a new transmission filter, and refill with Dextron III or IV type fluid. If that does not do the trick go to a good transmission shop or get a Goodwrench rebuilt wit all the GM upgrades,

Well i dont know to much about it but i know GM did this thing were it forces you to shift from 1-4 for gas milage? Its calledskip shift. Dont ask me but theres this thing you can buy from slp its called a slp skip shift elminator and it just replaces the plug you already have in there. I hope that helps

You are confusing us, do you have an auto 4 speed or a manual 6 speed?
