Default sensor question

ok i just got a 98 camaro z28 i had a 96 but some jackass kid decided he was going to run a red light and hit me so i got this new car ive had it for about two weeks and i pulled the diff. cover off two days ago cuz i heard a grinding noise and sure enough my gears were shot so i went and found a new complete rear end at the junk yard and put it in today and i realized that there is a second gear next to the ring gear and a sensor that rides on it too i was wondering what it does?

That is the reluctor ring & WSS (wheel speed sensor) for the rear ABS. Used in v6 cars & V8 cars without traction control.

Not a whole lot, but it will be reading faster than you're actually going.
