Default security light on

so a while back my security came on and i figured it was just the key and really didnt give a thought to it. well today i went out and got a new key for my car and it starts but the security light is still on. is this possibly because i got a bad key or could it be some other issue? i got the key from a local hardware store that makes vats keys. my car is a 1997 camaro z28. is there a way to make this security light go away? i figured putting the new key in would make it go away. please help. i hate electronics but will deal with them to get my stuff fixed.

sounds like a wiring problem or is in the key reader. have a look here and see if it helps 4th Gen LT1 F-Body Tech-PassKey/VATS

So I read the article and the way I read it my car is in fault enabled mode and it is ignoring the pass key issue until i fix it. If I am wrong on this please let me know. Is this something I need to care about or not? The only thing really bothering me is the light as long as the car starts and runs.

Yep that's pretty much it, the VATS system is disabled.
So your two bothers are you have no security system, and the light is on.

Cool. Thanks for the help guys. I'm not really concerned about no security system. And as long as it keeps starting them I'm good. Thanks again for the help.

I think it is not the key. But as mentioned above its a wiring problem. I faced somewhat similar scenario by myself.
