I have a friend who has a new girlfriend, she has a 97 Camaro V-6.

From what I understand there is an anti-theft chip that must be plugged into the car before will start, well the chip is lost....

Are there any alternatives tothe dealerfor a replacement chip?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

(if it helps any, she has to drive a Mustang until her Camaro is running...... )

They tell me that the security chip is separate, and it slides in near the drives side kick panell.

There is no security chip, there is a resistor in the key that activates the security module under the dashboard. The security module sends a signal to the PCM if the right key is used. When the PCM sees the signal it enables the start relay and fires the fuel injectors. The module is bolted in, so I don't see how it could get lost. The module itself cannot be bypassed, but can be deleted in the PCM software.

I am supposing that since no one here has heard of this, that it must be some kind of aftermarket device. I have not actually seen it,, so I am still unsure of exactly what it is....

Thanks for your help, at least at this point I am sure that we are dealing with somthing aftermarket...

Are you sure it isn't part of an alarm system that was installed? I know some of them have chips.
